School Board to Vote on Grading Policy

Background:
The School Board is considering changes to the current grading policy. More than 1,000 people attended
the January 8 School Board meeting when School Board staff presented its recommendation not to change the grading
scale. At the School Board work session on January 12, several members of the School Board recognized that the
public has lost confidence in the current grading scale. Said Vice-Chair Kathy Smith, “There appears to
be consensus that we need to change the grading scale.”
Please try to attend the School Board meeting on Thursday, January 22nd at 7:00 p.m. Your presence could make a
difference!

Debate between Chairman, Board of Supervisors Candidates

Background:
FairfaxCAPS is sponsoring a debate between Sharon Bulova (D-Braddock) and Pat Herrity (R-Springfield), candidates in
the special election for Chairman, Board of Supervisors. This is the only debate that will be devoted exclusively
to education issues. Topics will include the school budget and budget priorities, funding for Gatehouse II, and
other issues related to county government support for schools and education. Come to learn the candidates’
views on these important issues. Questions from the audience will be taken during the debate. You can also
use the online form to submit an education-related
question for the candidates at the debate.
The debate is co-sponsored by the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, Fairness in School Sports, the Fairfax County
Association for the Gifted, and the Hunter Mill Defense League. FAIRGRADE and SLEEP are also participating in the
debate.
