To be active and effective parent and taxpayer advocates for our kids and Fairfax County Public Schools.
Fairfax CAPS is a coalition of civic organizations, neighborhood associations, parents, homeowners and area residents who seek a more transparent, inclusive and democratic process for determining the direction of Fairfax County schools. Formed in 2008 following a tumultuous West County boundary debate, Fairfax CAPS is a voice for those who feel unrepresented by elected officials and county staff.
In times of financial challenges and unfunded federal mandates, we will work collaboratively with all community stakeholders to keep Fairfax County’s public schools at the top of America’s primary and secondary educational institutions. Where problems exist, we will meet them head on and make sure the best solutions are considered and utilized for the benefit of all students. We will bring our talent, background and experience—a population of highly educated and deeply committed people with dozens of languages, nationalities and ethnicities among us—to help Fairfax County Public Schools embrace its diversity and succeed in the future.
We welcome all in the community to join us in advancing the cause of educational excellence for all of the children of Fairfax County.
The 2007 Western Fairfax Boundary Study served as a catalyst for many of our members to become politically active, many for the first time in their lives.
The proposed Boundary changes raised serious concerns among many voters and homeowners about taxpayer influence on FCPS decisions that impact our lives and our children’s lives.
As we attended Town Hall Meetings and attempted to voice our views, these concerns deepened. It was apparent to many of our members that sitting back and believing FCPS and the School Board would always act in our best interest was no longer a viable option.
We had abdicated our oversight responsibility. We decided it was time to reclaim it.
